About the creation of A Colorado Evening
A Colorado Evening was born from an idea that had been quietly simmering in Mike Rhodes’ mind for years. Long before it ever had a name, the heart of the show lived in the songs he loved—music he had played, listened to, and carried with him throughout his life. From the timeless sounds of America and the Eagles to the unmistakable spirit of John Denver, these songs weren’t just his personal favorites; they were foundational influences to his own musical development journey.
As Mike grew in his career, he also grew in his understanding of Colorado’s rich and often surprising musical legacy. Stories about the legendary Caribou Ranch Recording Studio began to fascinate him—tales of the countless artists who recorded there, the magic of the mountains, and the surprising connections that shaped iconic songs. He was captivated by learning that artists like Neil Diamond came to Colorado year after year, sometimes for months at a time, drawn by the same beauty and inspiration that fuel this show.
When Mike began imagining what a live performance rooted in Colorado’s musical heritage might look like, he realized something important: audiences on the East Coast or beyond may not know or care about Red Rocks, Caribou Ranch, or the deep musical history of the Rockies—but they always connect with the music. That insight helped shape A Colorado Evening into a show that is authentic, universal, and deeply personal.
“A Colorado Evening” is, at its core, an extension of Mike’s natural musicianship and the soundtrack of his own artistic journey. Every song holds a story. For instance, “A Solitary Man” was the very first song Mike ever performed in public—and he still performs it today. Pieces like that aren’t just “a setlist choice” for Mike; they are chapters of his life in music. And he has discovered the songs from “A Colorado Evening” are also a chapter in the life of his audiences.
Through beloved classics, multimedia storytelling, and the unmistakable soul of Colorado, A Colorado Evening invites audiences to experience the songs that shaped Mike—and how the state of Colorado helped to shape those songs.
